Let’s read at Matthew 6

Before moving forward make sure you read the entire chapter. This chapter is a continuation of the message Jesus was preaching in Matthew 5.  This chapter dives into giving to the poor, praying and fasting, and money/possessions. These are all topics that tend to be hard to discuss among most believers. I have heard people say churches are just out for your money, or even that preachers shouldn’t discuss money. I also know that to some people “FAST” is almost a forbidden 4 letter word. Jesus lays it out pretty plain about these topics in these verses.

One main thing I see throughout the chapter is the idea of PRIDE. He mentions multiple times when giving, fasting, or praying you should do it quietly. So often our fleshly side wants recognition for what we have done, but if you seek recognition this side of heaven, that is the only recognition you will get.  The prideful man wants to be seen!  The man after Gods own heart, doesn’t need earthly praise because he is storing up treasure in heaven.

Internal Reflection: Are you guilty of needing recognition? Do you enjoy the pat on the back for a job well done? We all do from time to time.  However, we are to be spiritual people. People not ruled by what our flesh needs/wants.   I want to encourage you this month to bless someone.  Pray and ask God who HE would have you bless and just do it secretly!  It is an amazing feeling.

Some people get so worked up about how to pray. It is simple. Just talk to Him as you would talk to anyone standing in front of you.  He will meet you just where you are and help you! You don’t need to know all the right words or religious phrases. Begin to speak from your heart and take time to listen to what He has to say.  Read 1 John 5:14-15!

In  Dr. Mark Barclay’s SMTI year one, we learned many things on the topic of prayer. In one class I made some notes on having a prayer check list. Maybe this will help you stay focused. It may also help to create a prayer/confession binder. Below is the checklist I made.

o   Take time to thank God for everything (be specific)

o   Put others first- talk to Him about those who you are concerned about

o   Talk to God about you. Tell Him what you are going through ask him what he likes and dislikes about your current life. Allow Him to take care of your weaknesses. Ask Him how to handle the situations you are facing.

o   Shopping list- let Him know what you need from Him

I believe if you get into the habit of following this checklist or something similar you will have an easier time praying.  If you would like details on how to create a binder, please let me know and I will point you in the right direction.

Take time to rate your prayer life from 1-10 (1 being terrible and 10 being the best). ____

What can you do to make improvements?

Key Verse: Luke 11:10 (Take time to memorize if you haven’t already)

For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

You can always list any take-aways on a separate paper.
